Emily Bartlett Ms. Santi 1B PDP American Literature 7 December 2011 Young Goodman Brown In Young Goodman Brown, Nathanial Hawthorne utilizes the forest’s setting and character’s descriptions to show the symbolic meaning of each. The forest, each character and their actions all have specific meanings that are critical to the interpretation of the story. The story of Young Goodman Brown takes place in the town of Salem, Massachusetts, and the forest surrounding the town. Salem became famous for its witch tr1ials and the evil lurking within its forests. Forests are best known for being places of evil, â€Å"Satan’s playground†, for â€Å"There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree,† (Hawthorne 1). Several times in the Bible, snakes were used as punishment. After leaving Egypt, Moses and the Israelites take refuge in the desert. However despite being free, they sin and God becomes angry with the people. God punishes them by sending â€Å"fiery serpents to surround the camp. Moses admits to God that the people and himself are sinners and prays for the people. God tells Moses to build a brass serpent and to place it on a pole in the center of the camp. God says that anyone who looks upon the pole after being bitten shall live. Bringing the questioning of his relationship with the devil, or if he in fact is the devil. The fact that the staff appears to move as a snake would also shows that something is amiss in the woods of Salem. Later in the forest, Goodman Brown and the traveler come across one of the respected women from the church, Goody Cloyse. Goody Cloyse a pious woman, strict and true to the word of God, throughout the day. â€Å"He pointed his staff at a female figure on the path, in whom Goodman Brown recognized a very pious and exemplary dame, who had taught him his catechism, in youth, and was still his moral and spiritual supervisor.† (Hawthorne 2). The Incarceration Of Solitary Confinement - 1722 Words

A study conducted in California’s prison system from 1999 to 2004 determined that nearly half of all suicides committed by inmates were because they were in solitary confinement (Breslow, 2014). Although some inmates have failed at their suicide attempts, that does not mean that they have not attempted to end their lives. There is a higher rate of inmates self mutilating while being in solitary confinement than if they were in the general prison population (Breslow, 2014). This means that inmates that are isolated are more of a danger to themselves. Being in solitary confinement also attributes to personality disorders, Breslow mentioned that many inmates lose the ability to communicate with others after being in solitary confinement for a long period of time and thus do not want to leave their cells (2014). It can be argued that having inmates in solitary confinement is a human rights violation. When inmates are isolated, they are constantly being monitored through a camera. The inmates have no form of communication with people and even their food is passed through a slot on the door. Solitary confinement can be considered torture because it has been proven that by subjecting inmates to this they experience mental illnesses such as paranoia, hallucination, panic attacks, and suicidal attempts (Breslow, 2014). In this way, energy is transferred from the flowing water to the turbine.(Guangtai,2015) In Francis turbines, water enters the turbine runner in the radial direction and leaves axially. The main parts of a Francis turbine are spiral case, stationary vanes, guide vanes, runner, and draft tube, as shown in Figure 1. The flowrate and accordingly the produced power are adjusted by the guide vanes. The spiral case regulates the velocity profile entering the turbine, whereas the stationary vanes provide the mechanical strength.3 The most critical part of the turbine, runner, converts the water energy to mechanical energy and rotates the generator(Aradag,2018)A new design of main bearing and carbon seal ring for vertical-shaft Francis turbines provides a bearing immersed in an oil bath covering about one-third of its vertical length. Properly slanted and shaped oil grooves provide for self lubrication, thereby eliminating the troubles usually associated with mechanical lubrication. As a HR practitioner, I would like to focus on providing incentives to the employees and even motivate them through guidance, so that employee engagement would be possible and they could be influenced to perform to their potential. I would like to provide them with rewards for their better performances, which could not only lead to better performances but also would enhance their ability to learn and develop with time to contribute to the organizations efficiency. Resourcing and talent planning could be another area where I need to focus on for managing the processes of recruitment and selection properly as well as train the workers to improve their skills, knowledge and expertise level (Saundry and Wibberley 2016). Three key internal customers of HR The three major internal customers of HR are the employees, managers and departments where the employees have been working. The employees are the customers who need good working conditions, culture and proper guidance to ensure successful performing to their potential within the organization whereas the managers are responsible for managing the workforce. The managers need proper leadership skills and decision-making abilities to guide the team members in the right direction as well as enable them to set goals and objectives that are needed to be achieved. The managers need proper training to enhance their leadership skills and make sure that he workforce consists of skilled, knowledgeable and expert employees to contribute to the business efficiency (Mearns 2014). The various departments need proper amount of resources along with necessary attributes to form a dedicated workforce that can accomplish the business goals and objectives with much ease and effectiveness. The employees ne ed to be kept satisfied otherwise their dedication and morale would be lowered, which could deteriorate the business performance as a whole too (Davies 2017). Employees Employees often get into conflicts due to difference in their opinions and responses, because of which, it is essential for proper guidance by the HR manager to mediate the disputes and furthermore interpret the company policies to set up an appropriate behavior within the workplace. Emails could act as effective communication procedures for leveraging the subject line as well as make the receiver understand the messages properly. It could be done for communicating with the employees and gain their immediate attention that would require immediate actions too. Emails might often result in making the receiver not getting the messages properly and it could get into the outbox and remain undelivered. The complaints from the internal customers regarding some kinds of issues or conflicts could be managed by communicating with the employees and then plan for necessary remedial procedures. The time and budget should be considered to check whether the services could be feasible or not and how much time should be required for handling the issues within the workplace (Navin et al. 2014). Rather than just receiving the complaints of the customers, it would be important for the HR to make sure that the feedbacks of the employees were focused on and the sources of such kinds of issues could be identified. This could assist in undertaking immediate actions and even penalize the individual who might be held liable for the causes of such conflicts or issues at SABIC. The insights, strategy and solutions could be applied at senior level with the help of assessment of financial performance and checking the amount that could be considered as rate of return on investments. It could also be understood from the HR summary reports that the legal, financial and market factors should be analyzed for dealing with the issues faced within the organization and ensure successful functioning at SABIC (Alfes et al. 2013). Sheds coat in spring...... A perfect example of a product of utilitarian education, Bitzer defines a horse off the top of his head in a split second. Utilitarianism is the assumption that human beings act in a way that highlights their own self interest. It is based on factuality and leaves little room for imagination. Dickens provides three vivid examples of this utilitarian logic in Hard Times. The first; Mr. Thomas Gradgrind, one of the main characters in the book, was the principal of a school in Coketown. He was a firm believer in utilitarianism and instilled this philosophy into the students at the school from a very young age, as well as his own children. Mr. Josiah Bounderby was also a practitioner of utilitarianism, but was more interested in the profit that stemmed from it. At the other end of the perspective, a group of circus members, who are the total opposite of utilitarians, are added by Dickens to provide a sharp contrast from the ideas of Mr. Bounderby and Mr. Gradgrind. Thomas Gradgrind Sr., a father of five children, has lived his life by the book and never strayed from his philosophy that life is nothing more than facts and statistics. He has successfully incorporated this belief into the school system of Coketown, and has tried his best to do so with his own children. The educators see children as easy targets just waiting to be filled with information. They did not consider, however, the childrens need for fiction, poetry, and other fine arts that are used to expand childrens minds, all of which are essential today in order to produce well-rounded human beings through the educational process. One has to wonder how different the story would be if Gradgrind did not run the school. How can you give a utilitarian man such as Gradgrind such power over a town? I do like how Dickens structures the book to make one ask obvious questions such as these. Dickens does not tell us much about the success of the other students of the school besides Bitzer, who is fairly successful on paper, but does not have the capacity as a person to deal with lifes everyday struggles. Gradgrinds two oldest children, Tom and Louisa, are examples of how this utilitarian method failed miserably. These children were never given the opportunity to think for themselves, experience fun things in life, or even use their imaginations. True, they are smart people in the factual sense but do not have the street smarts to survive. Tom is a young man who, so fed up with his fathers strictness and repetition, revolts against him and leaves home to work in Mr. Bounderbys bank. Tom, now out from under his fathers wing, he begins to drink and gamble heavily. Eventually, to get out of a deep gambling debt, he robs a bank and is forced to flee the area. When Bitzer realizes that Tom has robbed the bank and catches him, Mr. Gradgrind begs him to let Tom go, reminding him of all of the hard work that was put on him while at the school. Ironically Bitzer, using the tools of factuality that he had learned in Gradgrinds school, replies that the school was paid for, but it is now over and he owes nothing more. I think this is extremely funny how, at a time of need, Gradgrinds educational theory has backfired in his face. I think Dickens put this irony in as a comical device but also to show how ineffective the utilitarian method of teaching is. Louisa, unlike Tom, does get along with her father. She even agrees to marry Mr. Bounderby, even though she does not love him, in order to please her father. She stays in the marriage with Bounderby, and goes about life normally and factually, until she is faced with a dilemma and panics. Mr. James Harthouse, a young, good looking guy, is attracted to Louisa and deceivingly draws her attraction to him. She does not know what to do since she has never had feelings of her own before. Her father never gave her the opportunity to think for herself, or even love someone. This is why Louisa goes frantic and ends up crying in her fathers lap. She has always been told what to do and what is right, and now even her father is stumped. For the first time in the whole novel, Mr. Gradgrind strays from the utilitarian philosophy and shows compassion for his daughter and her feelings. One must think that he is beginning

Siddhartha Gautama Siddhartha Gautama was born about 563 BC in what is now modern Nepal. His father, Suddhodana, was the ruler of the Sakya people and Siddhartha grew up living the extravagant life on a young prince. According to custom, he married at the young age of sixteen to a girl named Yasodhara. His father had ordered that he live a life of total seclusion, but one day Siddhartha ventured out into the world and was confronted with the reality of the inevitable suffering of life. The next day, at the age of twenty-nine, he left his kingdom and new-born son to lead an modest life and determine a way to relieve universal suffering. For six years, Siddhartha meditated under a bodhi tree. But he was never fully satisfied. One day he was offered a bowl of rice from a young girl and he accepted it. In that moment, he realized that physical hardships were not the means to freedom. From then on, he encouraged people not to use extremes in their life. He called this The Middle Way. That night Siddhartha sat under the bodhi tree, and meditated till dawn. He cleared his mind of all worldly things and claimed to get enlightenment at the age of thirty-five, thus earning the title Buddha, or "Enlightened One." For the remainder of his eighty years, the Buddha preached the dharma in an effort to help other people reach enlightenment. When Siddhartha is a Brahmin, he believes in the existence of many gods, and performs sacrifices to them. After a while he realizes this is meaningless and decides to leave his family and community and become a Samana. As a Samana, he tries to destroy himself in may ways. He feels if he kills himself, with its passions and emotions, he will find the great secret. Siddhartha doesn't spend much time as Buddha, although he has an important revelation. He discovers he can't find peace by learning from a master. He finds the only way to have peace with the world is by finding it for himself.
